The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
